Day 4: "God's Hand in Our Risks" (Ruth 3:1-18)

As I read the passage for today's study, I wondered where in the world Pastor Driscoll would go with this! I was not disappointed. :) I am sure that many people finish reading the third chapter of Ruth with puzzled thoughts. I know I did! Naomi gave Ruth some...well....questionable advice. Ruth had been following the will of God. Yet, obeying Naomi's advice to dress up, wait until Boaz had drunk some wine, and then lay at his feet in bed seemed somehow out of whack. However, that is only our view. God, in is His amazing faithfulness and mystery, used Naomi's advice and Ruth's obedience to accomplish His will. Although Ruth could have been "shallow" and jeopardized her purity along with Boaz's, she chose not to. Even in all the strangeness and riskiness of what took place, Boaz and Ruth never sinned during it. In fact, they instead beamed amazing character and integrity! These are some of the points in the sermon that really hit home for me:
  • Boaz, who had every worldly right to be prideful, was 100% humble. "The LORD bless you, my daughter," he replied. "This kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor." ~Ruth 3:10~ Instead of feeling that poor, widowed Ruth was unworthy of Him, Boaz felt unworthy of her! He was touched that of all the young, good-looking men, she chose him.
  • In giving her advice (though strange, it was given in faith! Faith in God, Boaz, and Ruth...) Naomi was being a "Titus 2 Woman."
  • When Boaz first prayed for Ruth, he prayed that God would take her under His wing. God used Boaz to do this! Boaz was able to provide earthly "wings" for Ruth. "He said, "Who are you?" And she answered, "I am Ruth, your servant. Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer." ~Ruth 3:9 (ESV)
  • Although the act of a man covering a woman with his blanket may seem sexual to us, in those days it was the equivalent of getting on one knee with a ring and popping the question! With her request to be covered with Boaz's blanket, Ruth was expressing her desire to marry him. Time was running out because barley harvest was soon to be finished. After that, Ruth would be separated from Boaz. A DTR (define the relationship) chat was definitely a must! :) If Ruth had a loving father, it would have been his job to conduct this. However, she didn't and things had to be handled differently.
  • What Ruth did was risky, but not necessarily foolish. We are called to take risks, but not to be foolish.
  • "Don't chase a guy--just get in his way." ~Mark Driscoll~ This quote made me smile! :) We need to not be running after men, but we also shouldn't hide from them. As God gives opportunities, it is ok for us women to gently put ourselves in the path of a potential husband. With God leading, there is nothing to fear. :)

  1. HI Micah,

You talked about all the good points!!! I didn't take very many notes on parts three or four...because this time I just wanted to sit and listen to the video. My dad is now interested and I'm going to watch it with him. That'll be fun.

I thought the history of the word "dating" was interesting. I'm going to have to google it and see what else I can find about that word. Hmm.. I've never really been into dating unlike every single other one of my friends when I was your age. I'm now 36. I didn't mind dating...but even as young as 16, I told God I didn't want to date, just for the sake of dating. Nope that's not for me. I would want to date because I really was interested in the guy and because I want to get married someday. So I didn't feel or want to play around. Nope , not for me. That was my conviction and commitment that I made to God!!!

Anyway, yeah, I thought that was a bold move on Ruth's part and if I was in her shoes, I'd be really nervous and scared to do that. I'd be afraid of rejection. I'm wondering if Ruth felt the same thing. However, she listened to Naomi, an older, wiser woman and she "obeyed". That's a key word. She obeyed Naomi.

I like that phrase, too "You shouldn't chase the guy, but you can get in his way" :) :) My friend Heather (same name as me) told me that only a few months ago :) :) So funny. I"m going to have to tell her about this Bible study series!!!!

I thought it was interesting that Naomi knew the right time to approach Boaz too. That seems to be important. Ruth didn't just barge in there. She waited until the time was right to make her request (acting on Naomi's advice). Also reminds me of Esther, who waited until the right time to make her request/plea for her people in front of her husband the king.
Oh that's another thing...make sure the guy not only demonstrates character/integrity in all areas of life, is nice to everyone...but also make sure he loves God..If he doesn't, than he's off limits.
I read a phrase somewhere "Don't give up what you want most for what you want right now" It's worth it to wait upon the Lord and serve Him and do things until He sees fit to bring the right man along...but in the meantime, preparation is good...developping godly character etc.
Hm...Boaz was a leader and knew how to make decisions. For me that's important...but I can't say it enough...really, I can't ...loving God first and foremost and integrity...both very important for that man you do decide to let into your heart someday!! I could tell you a couple stories of mistakes I have made...not bad ones, but still, I might have saved myself some heartache if I had listend to God more...

So I really like the story of Ruth and Boaz...there's hope for everyone. Your identity is found in God, not in jobs, stuff etc...because that's where the true heart lies...with God!!! This has given me some good things to think about as well as a good biblical guideline for the man I let "court" me. I think I'll use that word from now on....much better than dating ;) :) :)

Well, if you ever want to ask me any questions about anything, feel free!!! I can't wait for Part 5. I listened to that earlier today...and it was very good!!!

Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather :) :) :)
